What makes a cat "hypoallergenic"?

No cat is truly hypoallergenic. The breeds below produce less of the Fel d 1 protein — the main feline allergen — or shed less, so less allergen ends up on your sofa, clothes and bedding. Sensitive people can react to any cat, but the 10 breeds here are the most consistently tolerated by UK allergy sufferers.

The science: where Fel d 1 actually comes from

  • Saliva — the primary source. Cats spread Fel d 1 across their coat every time they groom. It dries and flakes off as airborne allergen.
  • Skin & sebaceous glands — produced continuously and shed with dander, even by hairless breeds.
  • Urine — significant in unneutered males especially. Litter trays are a major in-home source.

Females and neutered males produce less Fel d 1 than intact males. For more on food allergies in pets, see our nutrition & allergies guide.

Managing cat allergies

Six evidence-based habits that dramatically reduce indoor allergen load.

Weekly bathing (for tolerant cats)
If your cat tolerates it, a gentle weekly bath measurably reduces Fel d 1 on the coat. Use a vet-recommended feline shampoo only.
Fel d 1-reducing food
Diets such as Purina Pro Plan LiveClear contain an egg-derived antibody shown to reduce active Fel d 1 in saliva by an average of 47% from week 3.
HEPA air purifiers
Run true-HEPA purifiers in your living room and bedroom. Fel d 1 particles are tiny and stay airborne for hours.
Wash hands after petting
Always wash hands after stroking, feeding or scooping the litter — and avoid touching your eyes until you do.
Keep the bedroom cat-free
A cat-free bedroom is the single biggest win for nighttime symptoms. Close the door and use a HEPA purifier overnight.
Groom & vacuum often
Brush your cat outdoors when possible and vacuum upholstery 2–3× a week with a HEPA-rated vacuum to stop dander recirculating.
