What "hypoallergenic" really means

No dog is truly hypoallergenic. The word describes breeds that produce less of the Can f 1 protein — the main canine allergen — or that shed and salivate less, so less allergen ends up on your sofa, clothes and bedding. Sensitive people can react to any dog, but the breeds below are widely considered the best-tolerated by UK allergy sufferers.

The science: where dog allergens actually come from

  • Dander — microscopic flakes of dead skin. Stays airborne and sticks to fabric for months.
  • Saliva — the Can f 1 protein dries onto the coat when a dog grooms itself, then flakes off.
  • Urine — contains allergens too; relevant for puppies and dogs that mark indoors.

Heavy shedders spread these proteins everywhere. Curly, wiry or single-coated breeds trap them, so weekly bathing and grooming physically removes the allergen instead of letting it settle in your home. Read more in our pet allergies guide.

Living with allergies

Six evidence-based habits that dramatically reduce indoor allergen load.

Weekly bathing
A gentle hypoallergenic shampoo once a week reduces Can f 1 protein on the coat by up to 84% in published studies.
HEPA air filters
Run a true-HEPA purifier in your living room and bedroom. They capture dander particles down to 0.3 microns.
Professional grooming
Book a professional groom every 6–8 weeks. See PawHub grooming for UK groomers near you.
Vacuum with a HEPA filter
Vacuum carpets, sofas and curtains 2–3× a week. A HEPA-rated bag or canister stops dander recirculating.
Keep the bedroom dog-free
You spend a third of your life in bed. A dog-free bedroom is the single biggest win for night-time symptoms.
Test before you commit
Spend a weekend in a friend's home with the breed you're considering. An allergist can also confirm whether dogs are your primary trigger.
