Travelling with dogs in the UK

Trains

  • Up to 2 dogs travel free on all UK National Rail services (under control on a lead or in a carrier).
  • Eurostar does not accept pet dogs (only assistance dogs).
  • London Underground welcomes dogs — carry on escalators.

Taxis & ride-hailing

  • London black cabs must by law accept assistance dogs; most accept pet dogs at the driver's discretion.
  • Uber Pet is available in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh — small surcharge applies.
  • Most local minicab companies have pet-friendly drivers — call ahead.

Crossing into and out of the UK

  • Post-Brexit, dogs travelling EU → UK need an EU pet passport or Animal Health Certificate, rabies vaccination ≥21 days before travel, and tapeworm treatment for entry.
  • UK → EU now requires an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from your vet — valid for 10 days for entry. £100–£200.
  • Northern Ireland: dogs travelling GB → NI need additional treatment under current rules — check DAERA before travelling.

Booking tips

  • Always confirm pet policy by phone — websites are often out of date.
  • Ask about restrictions (size, number, breeds — some insurers exclude certain breeds).
  • Check whether the dog can be left in the room (most say no without crate).
  • Pack: lead, towel, bed, two bowls, food, poo bags, vaccination card, tick remover.
